Our Story.....
Garner Frame shop has a rich history, spanning all the way back to 1950, When James Howell Garner believed that with the help of his family, he could create a full service frame shop to serve the Memphis community. Today, that belief continues, with Garner's rich history.
In 1950, James Howell Garner and his wife Josephine started a picture framing business in a building behind their Midtown Memphis house at 1318 Tutwiler. James, a bookkeeper for Goldsmith's Department Store, was made aware that the store no longer had a source for framing services. He accepted their challenge and began Garner Picture Framing Company.
A few years later, James invited his son George to join him in the business. The shop was moved to a shopping center on Cleavland Avenue; a location it soon outgrew. In 1964, James and George moved the business to 1633 Union Avenue in Midtown, where the shop steadily grew until it moved to its present East Memphis location in 2001.
George and Joyce Garner ran the family framing business for the next thirty years before turning it over to their sons Matt and Chris.
Today, Chris operates the third generation family business in a renovated residence in the heart of East Memphis. Occasionally, his wife Glenda and teenage sons Coleman and Madison can be found helping out around the shop. Who knows? A fourth generation, perhaps?
